Portsmouth Yardstick

The Portsmouth Yardstick is a handicapping system that allows boats of different types to race against each other by applying handicap ratings derived from statistical results of many races.

Portsmouth is most often used to handicap centerboard & catamaran classes, but rates many boats.

Portsmouth depends on you

Portsmouth's effectiveness depends directly on the quantity of race results submitted each year. Performance of boats in this region can not be reflected in the national statistics unless SAIL clubs report their results.

SAIL encourages clubs using the Portsmouth system to report their race results. Attach your Sailwave (.blw) or other results file to an e-mail addressed to the Chair of US SAILING's Portsmouth Committee, Darline Hobock,  hobockd@aol.com

A feature of US SAILING

The Portsmouth Yardstick document is compiled, published, and copyrighted by US SAILING, the national governing body for the sport in the USA. It is available for use by member organizations of US SAILING.

Explaining the numbers:

Portsmouth handicaps have four numbers associated with them. The purpose of the four numbers is that boats perform differently -- relative to each other -- in different conditions.

This is followed by numbers for

For using Portsmouth handicaps in Sailwave it is necessary to input wind strength. The following link goes to a brief explanation of the Beaufort Scale
