Colorado Cup
Introduction
The Colorado Cup is a competition among clubs and fleets who are members of SAIL. It is
scored as a team event, using a regatta on the SAIL Tour, which is open to both dinghies
& keelboats. The regatta to be used is designated by the Colorado Cup Chair, Tom
Downing.
Registrants for the regatta are asked to declare for a particular club or
fleet as their team. Only clubs or fleets which are members of SAIL are eligible to be
designated as teams. In the event, a team does not field at least five members, its
members will be given an opportunity to change their designated team. (For example, if the
Santana 20 team has only four members, each can choose to sail for a club.)
The scoring system is similar to that used in cross-country, low score
wins. The best five entrants of each team score for their organization. The next two
entrants do not score for their team, but may increase the scores of other teams. Teams
with fewer than five entrants received scores of "DNC" for the number less than
five.
Regardless of how starting divisions or courses are assigned, all boats
are scored as though they sailed the same race, handicapped on the Portsmouth Yardstick.

Colorado Cup Scoring
November 1, 2003
To provide a scoring system to allow for a competition of team sailboat racing from
each S.A.I.L. Club and/or Fleet to compete for the Colorado Cup, a scoring
system used by cross country teams in both College and High School athletics
has been modified. I recommend
that S.A.I.L. review this system and consider setting it as the standard for the Cup. I
have used this system for the scoring on the Colorado Cup for the last two years; 2003
& 2003.
Cross Country is a varsity sport in many parts of this country where teams of distance
runners compete each year. In this sport, each school can field up to seven runners. Each racer is given their score based on their finish position. Each team's score
is the total of its best five racers. The additional two racers serve as blockers,
finishing but not scoring. The team with the lowest score wins. A perfect score for a team
is 15 points. This score is awarded when a team's first five runners finish 1,2,3,4 &
5. Their places total 15 points.
I have proposed that the Colorado Cup be contested in conjunction with any Open
S.A.I.L. Regatta where both dinghies and keelboats representing member clubs and fleets of
S.A.I.L. are eligible. It has been assumed that it would be unfair to have a dinghy race
in one set of conditions and a keelboat race in different conditions on a different course
on a different day and then attempt to compare the race results. It has also been decided
that the races would be handicapped under the Portsmouth system because it provides a
rating system for both keelboats and dinghies common to the S.A.I.L. area.
Each racer, upon registering for the regatta must declare their S.A.I.L. member club or
fleet affiliation. (Fleet designations within a S.A.I.L. club do not qualify for fleet
affiliation unless they are also a S.A.I.L. listed fleet.) Racers may switch from a
S.A.I.L. fleet to a S.A.I.L. club affiliation only if the members of the fleet or club is
insufficient to constitute a complete 5-boat team. For example, a number of Santana 20
racers decide to enter the competition as a fleet but upon completion of the regatta
registration there are only four Santana 20 racers registered. At that time the Santana 20
racers may decide to revert to their individual club memberships rather than sail with a
missing member of the team. The missing member of the team would always be listed as DNC
or last in all races. The fleet must notify the regatta OA of their decision and change
their fleet Affiliation prior to the start of the last day of racing in the regatta.
Once the regatta has been completed, the race results will be rescored, race-by-race,
by S.A.I.L. to determine the Colorado Cup winning team. In rescoring each race as one
large Portsmouth race, only the top five finishers from each club or registered fleet will
be scored. This can be easily handled by the Sailwave scoring program by excluding each
club's/fleet's sixth and greater finisher and rescoring the race. This also means that the
finishers for each club need not necessarily be the same racers each race. There is no
limit on the number of racers a club may enter; there is only a limit on the number of
racers from each club that will score. If a club or fleet fails to enter five racers,
placeholders will be added to the scoring to bring the number of club racers to five.
These added racers will be listed as DNC for all races and scored appropriately. Each club
will be given the total of each of its five finisher's places and each clubs race scores
will be totaled to determine the club's score for a team total Colorado Cup position. Ties
in individual handicapped race finish positions will not be broken. Redress, protest and
arbitrated positions approved/accepted by the Regatta OA/PRO will be included.
DSQ's, DNF, DNS and DNCs will be scored as follows:
- DNF ....# of CC Team Finishers +1,
- DNS/DNC .... # of CC Team Starters +1,
- DSQ ........# of CC Teams Registered *5. (Typically a DSQ would not be scored if there
were more than 5 racers on the team)
There are no throw-outs, all races will be scored and the team points for all races will
be totaled. The team with the lowest point total for the regatta will win the Colorado
Cup.
Only races in which all fleets/starts finished will be rescored for the Colorado Cup.
If a race did not have a fleet finished, for any reason, it will not be scored in the
Colorado Cup. If the regatta is not completed, the Colorado Cup will not be awarded.
