US Sailing, as the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport, oversees a broad spectrum of activities across 11 distinct areas in the United States. Within these areas, RSAs serve as the linchpin for organizing and coordinating sailing activities. These umbrella organizations bring together regional clubs, ensuring that local sailors have access to a well-structured calendar of races, classes, regattas, and handicapping systems. More than just administrative bodies, RSAs are the backbone of grassroots sailing in the United States, fostering a strong community and promoting the sport at all levels.
The Sailing Association of Intermountain Lakes, S.A.I.L., represents a portion of Area F. Our portion of Area F consists of Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and the Western portion of Nebraska. The remainder of Area F RSA’s are the Texas Sailing Association and Central States Sailing Association.
SAIL was formed in 1972 to provide a communication route with Colorado State Parks for facilitating sailing clubs to organize sailing and sail racing events within the state and joined the national organization which became US SAILING in the mid-1970s. Its role has broadened to include coordinating sailing event schedules & education & training. It promotes & provides programs to promote & improve sailing in the greater Rocky Mountain region.
Strictly a volunteer operation, SAIL is a Colorado nonprofit organization. Officers and volunteers receive no compensation other than good will and the satisfaction of helping the sport. Operations are supported primarily by members’ annual dues, though fees to defray expenses are charged for some activities.
SAIL provides representation within US SAILING (the National Governing Body for the sport of Sailing) to sailors, clubs & fleets in the Rocky Mountain region.
